Bali's green interior is built around two things: rice terraces shaped by the subak irrigation system and waterfalls that cut through forested gorges. Both are easy to combine on one day if you stay in one region. Wear shoes with grip, since paths and stairways are steep and slippery after rain, and start early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Rice terraces and rice-field views
- Jatiluwih Rice Terraces: An extensive rice-growing landscape in the Tabanan highlands, maintained through the subak irrigation system and part of a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.
- Ceking Rice Terrace, Tegallalang: Part of the Tegallalang terrace landscape north of Ubud, with stepped paddies down the valley slopes and walking paths through working fields.
- Tis Cafe: A cafe and restaurant on Jalan Raya Ceking beside the Ceking rice terraces, serving Asian and Western dishes and drinks.
- Sidemen Rice Terrace: A cultivated rice-field landscape in the Sidemen valley of eastern Bali, framed by villages, streams and views toward the hills.
