In an emergency in Bali, three things decide how fast help arrives: calling the right number, saying exactly where you are, and reaching a hospital that can treat you. Below are the numbers, what to say on the call, and what to do in the situations visitors and residents meet most often: scooter crashes, animal bites, drowning, earthquakes, eruptions, lost passports and crime. This is general information, not medical or legal advice.
Which number to call
| Number | Use | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| 112 | General emergency number | Bali is a pilot area for fully implementing the single 112 number for fire, health, disasters and public order, so call routing may still be changing. |
| 110 | Police | Also the number for reporting a crime. |
| 118 or 119 | Ambulance | Try 118 first. PSC 119 is a rapid emergency health response service set up in 2016 by the Ministry of Health with the Ministry of Transportation. |
| 115 | Basarnas, national search and rescue | Ready to help 24 hours, with a WhatsApp Rescue line as well. |
| (0361) 480066 | Fire and rescue, Denpasar | The national fire number 113 may not connect in Bali. For a fire, use 112 or this number. |
If one number does not connect, try another. GSM mobile phones can dial 112 even when locked. Whether 112 works without credit or a SIM card is not certain, so save 110 and 118 as well.
Hospital emergency lines
Several hospitals have their own emergency lines, which can be quicker than a general number when you already know where you are going:
- Bali International Hospital, Sanur: 150 919, with emergency physicians available 24/7.
- Ari Canti Hospital, Ubud: ER quick contact +62 813-3734-2033.
- Nusa Medica clinics, including Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan: +62 818 0881 1911, a 24/7 emergency call centre.
- RSUP Prof Ngoerah (formerly Sanglah), Denpasar: Emergency Command Centre +62 822 4798 5258.
- Kasih Ibu hospitals: Alarm Centre +62 361 3002107, and an Evacuation and Repatriation Service on +62 361 3002102.
Hospitals with a 24-hour emergency department include BIMC Kuta, BIMC Nusa Dua, BIMC Ubud, RSUD Bali Mandara, Ari Canti and the regency hospitals in Gianyar, Klungkung, Karangasem and Bangli.
What to say on the phone
- Give the location first: street name, village or banjar, a landmark such as a temple, shop or hotel, and a Google Maps pin sent by WhatsApp if you can send one.
- Give a callback number.
- Say what happened, how many people are hurt, and whether each person is awake and breathing.
- Stay on the line until the operator tells you it is fine to hang up.
- Speak slowly and use short sentences. A passer-by or hotel staff member who speaks Indonesian can pass on the location.
| Indonesian | English |
|---|---|
| Tolong! | Help! |
| Darurat | Emergency |
| Kecelakaan | Accident |
| Ambulans | Ambulance |
| Polisi | Police |
| Kebakaran | Fire |
| Tenggelam | Drowning |
| Gempa | Earthquake |
| Digigit anjing | Bitten by a dog |
| Dicuri | Stolen |
| Paspor hilang | Passport lost |
| Rumah sakit | Hospital |
Useful full sentences are "Ada kecelakaan di ..." (there has been an accident at ...), "Tolong kirim ambulans ke ..." (please send an ambulance to ...) and "Bisa bahasa Inggris?" (do you speak English?).
Scooter accidents
Motorcycle and scooter accidents are a leading cause of death and serious injury among foreigners in many parts of Indonesia, including Bali. Moped and motorbike accidents in Bali have increased sharply, some of them fatal, and rental motorcycles are frequently stolen.
Article 231 of Law 22 of 2009 on road traffic requires a driver involved in an accident to stop the vehicle, help the victim, report the accident to the nearest police and give information about it. Under Article 312, a driver who deliberately fails to do so without a valid reason faces up to three years in prison or a fine of up to Rp 75,000,000.
After a crash:
- Move to a safe spot if the road is dangerous, and call 118 or 119 for an ambulance, 110 for police, or 112.
- Help anyone who is hurt, and stay at the scene or report to the nearest police station.
- Photograph the scene, the plates and the damage. Keep the rental contract and any police paperwork.
- Tell the rental company and your travel insurer.
- Check that your policy covers riding a scooter with the licence you hold, and that it covers your itinerary, your planned activities and expenses in an emergency.
Jasa Raharja is the state road-accident insurer. In one bus accident case, its compensation was Rp 50 million to the heirs of a person who died and treatment costs of up to Rp 20 million for injured victims. Whether foreign visitors qualify is not clear, so treat it as a possible safety net and not as a replacement for travel or medical insurance. The guide to driving in Bali covers licences and rental terms.
Hospitals, deposits and travel insurance
Indonesia has no reciprocal health agreement with the UK. Get insurance that covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation. An evacuation can be very expensive. If you are referred to a medical facility, contact your insurer quickly.
Hospitals handle the paperwork in different ways. Nusa Medica offers insurance claim handling with guarantee of payments. BIMC arranges medical evacuation by commercial flight, helicopter or air-ambulance charter. Kasih Ibu hospitals and Bali International Hospital run evacuation or air and ground transport lines. Deposit rules for foreign patients are not clear, so call your insurer's 24-hour line as early as possible, keep the policy number on your phone and ask the hospital what it needs.
Two kinds of hospital serve most visitors:
- Regency public hospitals, called RSUD, such as RSUD Sanjiwani in Gianyar, RSUD Klungkung, RSUD Karangasem and RSUD Bangli, with emergency departments open 24 hours.
- Private and international hospitals and medical centres such as BIMC, Bali International Hospital and Ari Canti, with 24-hour emergency services.
Rabies after a bite, scratch or lick
Bali has many street dogs, and monkeys live around temples and tourist areas. Get medical help immediately after any bite or scratch. Bali recorded 72,782 bites by rabies-carrying animals in 2023 and 34,809 by August 2024, and 54,521 doses of anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) by the same date. In Jembrana, 49 of 51 villages were still red zones in 2025.
What to do:
- Wash the wound straight away with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.
- Go to the nearest health facility at once. Only medical staff can decide whether someone is infected.
- Ask for post-exposure treatment. Category II and III exposures need human rabies vaccination, and severe exposures call for rabies immunoglobulin or monoclonal antibodies where indicated.
- Do not wait for symptoms. Once symptoms appear, rabies is fatal in 100% of cases.
Bali aims to be rabies-free by 2030. Rabies vaccine can be obtained free at the nearest health facilities, and a bite will not be fatal if the victim is vaccinated promptly. Whether the free vaccine applies to foreign visitors is not clear. Ask a doctor about pre-exposure vaccination before you travel.
Drowning and rip currents
Drowning kills around 300,000 people worldwide each year. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards, ask the lifeguards about the water before going in, and do not assume that calm, sunny weather is safe: rip currents often form in such conditions. If you are caught in a rip current, do not fight it. Swim parallel to the shore, then swim back to land at an angle.
If someone is in trouble in the water, call 112 or 115 and give the beach name and the nearest landmark. Basarnas has a unit for Nusa Penida and posts in Karangasem, Jembrana and Buleleng under its Denpasar office.
Earthquakes and tsunami
BMKG, the meteorology and geophysics agency, issues official earthquake and tsunami information through its website, the InfoBMKG app and a WhatsApp channel. Its Contact Center is (021) 196, and its page of earthquakes with tsunami potential shows graded warning levels.
After a major quake near the coast, a tsunami could arrive within minutes. Natural warning signs are a loud roar from the ocean, a sudden rise or wall of water, or sudden draining of water that shows the sea floor. Protect yourself from the shaking first, then move immediately to a safe place as high and as far inland as possible. Do not wait for warnings or evacuation orders.
Tanjung Benoa in Badung received UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Community recognition in 2022, which requires an easy-to-understand evacuation map and public tsunami signs. Wherever you stay on the coast, ask the accommodation where the nearest high ground is.
Volcanic eruptions
Mount Agung is Bali's active volcano, and Mount Batur is also monitored. PVMBG, the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre, sets the official alert levels and publishes them through its MAGMA Indonesia website and app. There are four levels: Level I Normal, Level II Waspada, Level III Siaga and Level IV Awas. MAGMA also has hazard zone maps, live seismograms and VONA notices for aviation. In October 2026, Agung and Batur were both at Level I.
Eruptions occur frequently across Indonesia. Follow the advice of local authorities, including areas to avoid, exclusion zones and air quality. If you have a flight booked, check with the airline.
Lost passport
- Report the loss or theft to the local police and ask for a copy of the report.
- Contact your consulate.
Consulate contacts:
- Australia. The Australian Consulate-General in Denpasar needs a police report for a new Australian passport, can issue an emergency passport when travel is urgent, and works by appointment. After hours, call +62 361 2000 100 and press 4, then 6, to reach the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra.
- Canada. There is no Canadian office in Bali. Canadians contact the Australian consulate during business hours.
- United Kingdom. The British Consulate Bali takes emergencies through an online contact form and has no telephone number. The UK Foreign Office line is +44 20 7008 5000 (option 1).
- New Zealand. The 24/7 consular emergency line is +64 99 20 20 20.
Robbery, scams and the tourist police
Report a crime at the nearest police station or call 110. The public services of Polda Bali include SPKT, the integrated police service centre. Kuta and Kuta Selatan districts fall under Polresta Denpasar, the rest of Badung under Polres Badung, and the Ngurah Rai airport area under its own Polres.
Credit card fraud is common in Indonesia. Keep your card in sight during transactions and use only licensed currency exchanges. Report scams to Patroli Siber.
Bali has a tourist police, the Polisi Pariwisata, whose job is to serve and help visitors and to handle problems at tourist destinations. It has no published hotline, so call 110 or 112.
Save these before they are needed
- 112, 110, 118 or 119, and 115 as phone favourites.
- Your insurer's 24-hour emergency line and the policy number.
- The address of your accommodation in Indonesian, or a screenshot of the map pin.
- A photo of your passport and visa page, and your consulate's number.
- The nearest hospital with a 24-hour emergency department.
