About this place

Pasar Kreneng, also written Kereneng Market, is in central Denpasar, with the night market on Jl Hayam Wuruk and Jl Kamboja. The market was established in the early 1980s, and unofficial markets and street vendors operated in the area before the official construction. Entry is free and the market is open 24 hours.

Day and night

The main building has three storeys and hundreds of vendors by day. Daytime stalls sell fresh produce and spices and cheap clothing, with t-shirts and shorts at about Rp 20,000 to 40,000, and vendors selling clothing, accessories and household items accept bargaining. At night the market turns into a street food market that opens around sunset, after 18:00, and runs until dawn, with dozens of stalls serving Indonesian food. Most dishes cost less than Rp 20,000.

What to eat

Savoury dishes include babi guling, with dozens of vendors near the main food court area, bakso, nasi goreng, sate kambing, soto ayam and tahu campur. Desserts include molen, pukis, terang bulan (martabak manis) and jasuke. The cooking covers Balinese, Javanese and Chinese-Indonesian styles. Fresh fruit and vegetables are bought early in the morning, and Saturday and Sunday evenings are busier and more local. Many vendors have no card machines, so small rupiah notes are useful.

Visiting

Scooter parking costs Rp 2,000 and car parking Rp 5,000, and the rear parking lot is used when the main entrance lot is full. The drive takes about 30 to 45 minutes from Canggu or Seminyak and about an hour from Ubud. Badung Market, Kumbasari Art Market, Bali Museum, Agung Jagatnatha Temple and Bajra Sandhi Monument are nearby.
