How to extend your visa in Bali: e-VOA, tourist visa and KITAS extensions step by step

How extensions work in Bali in 2026: e-VOA, visit visa and ITAS rules, filing windows, the photo and interview at the immigration office, typical timelines, fees and the mistakes that cost overstay fines.

This guide is for anyone in Bali who needs more time than their entry permission gives: visa on arrival and e-VOA holders, tourist and business visa holders, and KITAS holders renewing a limited stay permit. Indonesian immigration rules, fees and office procedures change often, so confirm the current step with the immigration office that covers your address or with a licensed professional. Recent points: Bali's immigration offices are enforcing permit rules actively in 2026, the government renamed 32 immigration offices from 5 October 2026 (the official release names only four examples, none in Bali), and a nationwide closure of administrative services around Nyepi and Eid in 2025 shows that holidays can pause in-person services.

Which extension applies to you

Your permission Can it be extended? When to apply Where
Visa exemption (30 days) No Not applicable Leave before day 30
Visa on arrival or e-VOA (index B, 30 days) Once, for 30 days, so 60 days in total The office page gives two windows, see below Online, then photo and interview at the immigration office covering your address
Visa on arrival (index F, 7 days) No Not applicable Not applicable
Tourist or business visit visa (C1, C2, D1) Yes, in 60 day steps, up to 180 days in total No earlier than 14 days before expiry and no later than the expiry date Online, to the office covering your place of residence
Limited stay permit, 1 year or less (ITAS) Yes No earlier than 30 days before expiry and no later than the expiry date Online, with the immigration office
Limited stay permit, more than 1 year Yes No earlier than 3 months before expiry and no later than the expiry date Online, with the immigration office, with approval from the Director General of Immigration for longer terms
Permanent stay permit (ITAP) Yes No earlier than 3 months before expiry and no later than the expiry date Office covering your residence, forwarded to the Director General

The visa exemption stay of 30 days is single entry and cannot be extended or converted. The index F visa on arrival lasts 7 days and cannot be extended.

What to prepare

  • A passport valid for more than six months for a visa on arrival extension. For an ITAS extension the official page states no minimum remaining passport validity, but a long gap can cause trouble at other steps, so renew early if you are close to the six month mark.
  • A colour scan of your return or onward ticket (required for the visa on arrival extension).
  • The accommodation address where you will stay for the next five days, with the correct postal code. For e-VOA extensions the office that handles your file depends on that postal code.
  • A working email address. Photo and interview invitations arrive by email.
  • A way to pay online or in cash at a bank, post office or convenience store, depending on the route. The office page lists cash payment at a local bank for e-VOA and manual visa on arrival, and cash at a bank or post office for the Indonesian payment method.
  • For visit visa extensions: a valid passport, a statement of your purpose in staying, and, if you used a sponsor for the visa, a guarantee letter from the same sponsor. If you change sponsor you also need a signed statement declining the previous sponsor and a release letter from that sponsor.
  • For ITAS extensions: your current ITAS, a valid passport, an integration statement (not needed for unmarried children under 18), proof of guarantee if you have a sponsor, and, where your permit came with a commitment, proof you have kept it (for example three months of bank statements, company deed changes or property tax records). The official page says proof of living funds is not needed for extensions.

Extending an e-VOA or visa on arrival

The Ngurah Rai immigration office describes these steps for an e-VOA:

  1. Sign in to your account on the official e-visa portal and go to the page for claiming or extending your stay permit.
  2. Fill in your data and the accommodation address for the next five days with the correct postal code, and upload the files requested.
  3. Pay within 3 days of applying. After paying, you must visit the immigration office that covers that postal code.
  4. Wait for an email about your photo and interview session.
  5. Go to the office for the photo and interview.

For a visa on arrival that was bought at the airport bank counter and stamped as a sticker (the manual version), the steps listed are similar: sign in, claim your stay permit on the same page, fill in the data and address, upload files, select your name on the list and choose extend, pay, wait for the email, and attend the photo and interview. The B1 visa page also says that holders of a non-electronic visa on arrival must extend at the immigration office nearest their place of residence, so confirm with the office whether you can start online or must walk in.

The fee is Rp 500,000 per extension. The overstay charge on the same page is Rp 1,000,000 per day.

Timing is described in two ways on the same office page. One line says the earliest you can apply is 14 days before your stay expires. Another says the earliest is 14 days after arrival and the latest is 7 days before the stay ends. Applying between 14 and 7 days before expiry satisfies both statements. Ask the office if you are unsure.

Extending a visit visa (C1, C2, D1)

Visit stay permits can be extended online through the portal. The official pages state:

  • The first stay is 60 days and each extension is 60 days, up to 180 days in total. Some special visit visas (pre-investment, internship, government duty, prospective foreign worker) have different limits.
  • Apply no earlier than 14 days before the current permit ends and no later than its expiry date. The extension begins one day after the previous permit ends.
  • If you pay the extension fee before the permit expires, you are not counted as overstaying even if processing finishes after the expiry date.
  • Processing is up to 3 working days after payment. Applicants from countries on the calling visa list are forwarded to the Director General of Immigration, and processing can take up to 5 working days.
  • If immigration finds an error or missing document, you have 2 days after the electronic notice to fix it, otherwise the application is rejected.
  • The approved permit is sent electronically.

An older official FAQ (last updated January 2024) says visit permits can be extended at most five times, 30 days each. The newer extension page describes 60 day steps up to 180 days. Treat the newer page as the current rule and confirm at the office.

The extension fee for a 30 day visit permit is Rp 500,000 on both pages. For 60 and 180 days the pages disagree: the extension page states Rp 2,000,000 and Rp 6,000,000, while the fee table on the Ngurah Rai site (stated as based on Government Regulation 45 of 2024) lists Rp 1,000,000 and Rp 2,000,000. Confirm the amount with the office before paying.

Extending a KITAS (ITAS)

Most KITAS holders extend online, usually through their sponsor's account, and then attend a photo session at the immigration office. The steps are listed as: submit the application, upload documents, pay, immigration office verification and photo, and issuance. A permit longer than one year adds a verification step by the Directorate General of Immigration.

  • Filing window: for permits of one year or less, no earlier than 30 days before expiry. For permits longer than one year, no earlier than 3 months before expiry. In both cases no later than the expiry date.
  • Processing time: up to 3 working days after fees are received for extensions the local office can approve, or up to 5 working days after the Director General receives the file when that approval is required.
  • Start date: the extension starts one day after the current ITAS ends.
  • Overstay protection: if you file and pay before expiry but processing ends after it, the delay is not counted as an overstay.
  • Limits: for most work permits an extension cannot exceed the original period and total time on an ITAS is capped at 6 years. For investor and several second home permits, total stay is capped at 10 years.
  • Old card: the official FAQ says an extension requires the old ITAS card, so keep it safe.

The published fee table lists limited stay permit fees by period: Rp 3,000,000 for one year and Rp 5,000,000 for two years, with re-entry permits of Rp 1,500,000 and Rp 2,000,000 for the same periods. The extension page itself does not state amounts and refers to the fee schedule, so confirm the total for your permit type.

For a permanent stay permit the official page says the extension can be filed from 3 months before expiry, with a fee of Rp 5,000,000 for 5 years, Rp 10,000,000 for 10 years and Rp 15,000,000 for an unlimited permit. The older fee table shows different amounts for the 5 and 10 year periods, so confirm before paying.

Photo, interview and biometrics

The pages describe a photo and an interview. They do not mention fingerprints, so ask the office what to bring. The Ngurah Rai office states these practical points:

  • It is at Jalan Raya Taman Jimbaran No. 1, Jimbaran, Badung.
  • Stay permit extensions are handled from 08:00 to 11:00 WITA, and the queue number for the stay permit photo is issued before 11:00 WITA. The foreigner photo service runs from 08:00 to 15:00 WITA.
  • Office hours are Monday to Thursday 08:00 to 16:00 WITA and Friday 08:00 to 16:30 WITA, with lunch breaks.
  • The office site shows a live queue board but does not describe an online booking system.
  • An immigration lounge operates at a mall in Kuta, and Antara reported in August 2026 that a lounge in Kuta opened in July 2026 and serves about 100 to 120 foreigners a day applying for residence permits.
  • The office lists a WhatsApp number and email address on its official site for questions.

Bali has other immigration offices as well. The one that handles your file depends on where you live, so check which office covers your address before travelling across the island.

Typical mistakes

  • Waiting for the last day. Several steps (payment, photo session, queue before 11:00) take time, and an application must be filed and paid before expiry.
  • Paying late. The e-VOA flow expects payment within 3 days of applying, and the fee must be paid before the permit expires to avoid overstay.
  • Wrong address or postal code. The office that must see you depends on it.
  • Missing the email. The photo and interview invitation comes by email, and errors in documents must be corrected within 2 days of notice or the file is rejected.
  • Wrong sponsor paperwork. Changing sponsor without a release letter and a signed statement stops the extension.
  • Overlooking passport and ticket rules. A visa on arrival extension asks for a passport valid for more than six months and a return or onward ticket scan.
  • Assuming a visa on arrival can become a KITAS from inside Indonesia. Official pages describe this differently, so check first.
  • Starting too early. The official pages set "no earlier than" limits, so a request outside the window may not be accepted.
  • Working or earning on a visit permit while extending. Extensions do not change what the permit allows, and misuse of a stay permit can mean prison of up to 5 years or a fine of up to Rp 500,000,000 under Article 122 of the Immigration Law.

Holidays and closures

In 2025 immigration announced a nationwide pause in administrative services from 27 March to 7 April, covering Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr. Inspections of arriving and departing travellers, e-VOA services and emergency hotlines continued, and foreigners were told to apply online to extend so applications would be processed after the holiday. Plan an extension well before Nyepi and major national holidays.

If you miss the deadline

Under Article 78 of the Immigration Law, overstaying by less than 60 days means a charge under the regulations, and non-payment can lead to deportation and a re-entry ban. More than 60 days leads directly to deportation and a ban. The Ngurah Rai office states the charge as Rp 1,000,000 per day. In 2026, flight disruptions led Bali to waive the charge for stranded travellers and offer emergency stay permits of up to 30 days. Immigration said it would account for force majeure while applying Indonesian law. If you are already late, go to the office as soon as possible rather than waiting.

Where to get it done

  • Immigration office (kantor imigrasi) covering your address: for photo, interview, queue numbers and questions. Take your passport and your application and payment details, and ask the office what else it needs for your permit type.
  • Immigration lounge: a service point in Kuta that handles residence permit applications, subject to its own opening hours.
  • Sponsor or licensed agent: for ITAS extensions that run through a sponsor account. Ask for the government fee to be shown separately from any service fee.
  • Notary or licensed lawyer: for company documents behind investor and work permits.

Questions people ask

Can I extend a 30 day visa exemption?

No. The visa exemption (A1) allows a single entry of up to 30 days and the official page says it cannot be extended or converted to another stay permit.

How do I extend an e-VOA in Bali?

Sign in to the official e-visa portal, claim your stay permit, enter the address where you will stay for the next five days with the correct postal code, upload the files, pay within 3 days and then attend the photo and interview at the immigration office covering that postal code. The fee is Rp 500,000.

When is the earliest and latest I can apply to extend?

It depends on the permit. Visit permits can be extended from 14 days before expiry until the expiry date, ITAS of one year or less from 30 days before, and longer ITAS and ITAP from 3 months before. For a visa on arrival the office page gives two windows, so applying 14 to 7 days before expiry fits both.

How long does an extension take?

Official pages state up to 3 working days after payment for visit permits and ITAS extensions the local office can approve, and up to 5 working days where the Director General must approve. Add time for the photo session and for queues.

Am I overstaying if my extension is still being processed?

The official pages say that if you file and pay before the permit expires, a processing delay that runs past the expiry date is not counted as an overstay. The extension takes effect one day after the previous permit ends.

Is there a limit on how many times I can extend?

Yes. A visa on arrival can be extended once. Tourist and business visit permits are extended up to 180 days in total. ITAS limits depend on the type, for example 6 years in total for most work permits and 10 years for investor and some second home permits.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

The Ngurah Rai immigration office states a charge of Rp 1,000,000 per day. Under the Immigration Law, an overstay of more than 60 days leads to deportation and a re-entry ban.
