Melasti Beach

Melasti Beach is a coastal beach below the limestone cliffs of Ungasan in the Uluwatu area of southern Bali. The shore is reached by a road carved through the cliffs and forms part of the dramatic Bukit Peninsula coastline.

The beach has a sandy shoreline, coastal water, tall pale cliffs and a broad access area near the shore. The surrounding coast is used for public beach visits and for Balinese Hindu Melasti purification ceremonies, which give the beach its name.

Cultural setting

Melasti is a Balinese Hindu ceremony connected with purification and preparation for important religious days. The beach landscape therefore has both a public coastal function and a role in local religious life.
