Pura Penataran Sasih

Pura Penataran Sasih is a Hindu temple in Pejeng, east of Ubud in Gianyar. The temple is closely associated with the Moon of Pejeng, a large bronze drum regarded as one of the most important ancient artefacts in Bali.

The complex includes gateways, courtyards, shrines and the pavilion where the bronze drum is preserved. Traditional stone carvings and temple structures surround the artefact, while the wider Pejeng valley contains several important archaeological and religious sites.

History

The Moon of Pejeng is a Dong Son culture drum dating from the Bronze Age. Local tradition gives the object a sacred identity and connects it with the moon, while archaeological sources place it within the early history of Southeast Asian metalwork.
